Glycerin

What is Glycerin

Glycerin (also called glycerol) is one of the most researched, safest, and most effective ingredients in dermatology. It’s simple, affordable, and incredibly powerful — which is why you’ll find it in almost every good moisturiser or serum. Because, as we know, it's a base ingredient.

What exactly is glycerin?

Glycerin is a humectant, meaning it attracts water.

It pulls:
• moisture from the environment
• water from deeper layers of the skin

…into the top layer (stratum corneum), keeping skin hydrated and healthy.

Think of it like a water magnet for your skin.

How glycerin improves skin (clinically)

1. Deep hydration

Glycerin increases water content in the stratum corneum.

Result:
• plumper skin
• less flaking
• smoother texture
• healthy glow

Hydrated skin also reflects light better → natural radiance.

2. Strengthens the skin barrier

This is one of its biggest benefits (and often overlooked).

Glycerin helps:
• restore lipids
• reduce transepidermal water loss (TEWL)
• improve barrier repair

A strong barrier means:
• less sensitivity
• less redness
• fewer breakouts
• better tolerance to treatments (lasers, peels, actives)

3. Supports skin healing

Research shows glycerin:
• improves cell maturation
• supports normal skin shedding
• speeds barrier recovery

So it’s excellent for:
• post-laser
• post-peel
• dry/eczema-prone skin
• compromised skin

It helps skin heal faster and more calmly.

4. Softens and smooths rough skin

Glycerin improves desquamation (natural exfoliation).

It gently:
• softens dead skin
• reduces roughness
• smooths texture

Without irritation, such as strong acids or scrubs.

Great for:
• dry patches
• keratosis pilaris
• flaky winter skin

5. Works for ALL skin types

Safe for:
✔ oily skin
✔ acne-prone
✔ sensitive
✔ rosacea
✔ mature skin
✔ post-treatment skin

Unlike heavy oils, glycerin hydrates without clogging pores or feeling greasy.

Non-comedogenic. Non-irritating.

6. Makes other products work better

Hydrated skin absorbs ingredients more effectively.

So glycerin:
• improves penetration of serums
• boosts active performance
• enhances moisturisers
